When we started planing our little adventure we looked into many different options on what we could do when it came to working in Australia. There are many opportunities here for travelers, especially for people that have a one year working holiday visa. One thing we kind of decided on a whim is that we wanted to live in a van ( more about this later ) so that somewhat limited our options, but we could make it work since now we had our own transport and there are a lot of farms in the rural towns that could provide us stay. This was the plan until we found HelpX and wanted to give it a try. In their own words:
“HelpX is an online listing of host organic farms, non-organic farms, farmstays, homestays, ranches, lodges, B&Bs, backpackers hostels and even sailing boats who invite volunteer helpers to stay with them short-term in exchange for food and accommodation.” http://www.helpx.net/index.asp
There are other sites available online, like WWOOF.com who provide with similar options, they only offer mostly farmstays at organic farms but the concept is basically the same. I cant say we have regretted our decision to pick HelpX as we have had amazing time with all our hosts and have learned a lot. Here are my top 3 reasons why you should try HelpX on your next trip.
3. Learn something new
When was the last time you learned how to do something outside your schooling or work? The opportunities are endless if you are open minded. Every host has a profile with their expectations for work and what they offer in return. From minding horses and livestock, to cleaning, orginizing, even learning yoga – yes yoga – as long as you come eager to learn and participate the hosts are excited to show you the ropes and make you feel like part of the family.
2. Experience the country with the locals
It’s not all work when volunteering, most hosts are excited to have new people to show around and share a bit of the history of the surrounding towns. I don’t think I could have found half of the quirky neighborhoods and hidden waterfalls if it wasn’t for the super friendly hosts we had at our last HelpX experience. They made us feel so very much welcomed and truly filled our stay with impromptu trips to hidden treasures and swimming holes.
1. Meet amazing people
Honestly I have never shared so many once in a lifetime experiences with my now new lifelong friends, but people really make those moments so much more memorable. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to share knowledge and ideas with so many different people from different backgrounds and maybe even open your mind to something you have never thought about before. Scott and I never feel alone on the road anymore as we get constant updates on everyone’s plans and get to have little mini dates with friends all along the East Coast of OZ.
Do you have an amazing experience you would like to share? xoxo Viki
